Mom & Son

A lot of organizations raise money by putting on sports clinics for youth athletes. Residents of Lexington, S.C., put a new twist on the idea this winter by offering a mother-son sports clinic.

Organized by the Lexington Women’s Club, the event featured members of Lexington High School boys’ soccer and basketball teams as coaches and targeted 4 to 10-year-old boys and their mothers. Monies raised went toward college scholarships given to Lexington’s graduating seniors.

“We like our sports in South Carolina,” says Lexington Women’s Club Chairperson Kathy Roberts. “We thought this would be a great way for mothers and sons to bond, and all the mothers have given us very positive feedback.”

Attendees started the day by watching a pep rally put on by Lexington’s cheerleaders and then split into three groups. They rotated through stations for basketball and soccer where student-athletes and coaches taught basic skills. Each mother-son pair also competed against each other in a game of H-O-R-S-E and a soccer shootout. The final station offered photographs taken by a local studio.

“The athletes and coaches had a great time and they’re looking forward to doing it again next year,” says Roberts. “You never know how high school students are going to react in a situation like that, but they were nice, patient, and just a delight. We had a very organized team and the event was a huge success.”
