Diversity In D-III

Since 2005, the Texas A&M University Laboratory for Diversity in Sport has honored NCAA Division I and II schools with Diversity in Athletics awards. This year, for the first time, Division III became part of the program.

Carleton College was one of nine Division III schools honored for "Overall Excellence in Diversity," and also earned an award in the "Diversity Strategy" category. For Carleton Athletic Director Leon Lunder, diversity plays a large role in his department's overall philosophy--especially when it comes to hiring coaches.

"We make a concerted effort in all our hiring to identify candidates from a variety of different ethnicities and both genders," says Lunder, adding that he spreads the net as wide as possible and recruits on a national basis.

"It's also about how you advertise and network," he continues. "For example, we access the resume portfolios from the NCAA programs that are specifically targeted to developing ethnic minorities and women, and we list our positions with specific coaching groups, such as the Black Coaches Association."

Another key is to promote your school to potential hires. "Administrators have to be willing to reach out and prove that their institution is a good place to be," he says. "Sometimes it's hard to find candidates who will enhance your diversity because they're very popular candidates. It's about convincing them they should take a look at your school."
